Last Thursday’s Ice Cream event was a big success and we hope you all enjoyed a cool treat after a hot night of riding. If you didn’t make that event, don’t worry, we will hold another night in August.
In tonight’s announcement:
- Skills Training Opportunity
- ‘Power of 10’ Fundraising Event
- Clothing Order – Round 2 coming soon!
- Max’s Big Climb – Saturday July 23rd
Skills Training Opportunity
At the start of this season we offered a new group rider orientation session. This session was well received and we are once again offering another training session that will be held by Cycling Centre - this will focus gear selection, climbing and descending techniques.
The session will be held on Sunday July 24th from 9:00-11:00a.
There are 30 spots available. If you are interested in attending this event, please sign up using the following link – the cost of the session will be covered by the club. Please note, in an effort to spread training dollars across as many members as possible, preference will be given to those members who did not attend the first training session. If you did attend the group rider orientation, you can still sign up and we will add you if there are available openings.
‘Power of 10’ Fundraising Event
In last week’s announcement we communicated a fundraising event called ‘Power of 10’ which will raise funds for the Lighthouse Program for Grieving Children. The date was stated incorrectly and will be held on Friday October 14th at 7:00pm.
The Club Exec has discussed this event and we are pleased to say that we will allocate some of our 2016 budgeted charity dollars to cover an OCC team entry. We are looking for 10 members to participate in this event which will be held on the velodrome infield at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre – the goal is to have all teams entered in the event to collectively ride 1000km in 100 minutes. All we are looking from you is your time and enthusiasm to support this great initiative.
If this is something you would like to participate in, please respond to this email and we will communicate additional details as we get them from the Power of 10 organizing committee.
Clothing order - round 2 Coming soon!
Our new club clothing has been a hit and it’s been great to see so many members wearing it on club rides, and even on non-club rides!
We’ve had some enquiries from members who either missed out and want to order clothing, and those who ordered and would like to order additional items. We will be working with Garneau this week to set up another ordering window. We expect further details to be available in next week’s announcement.
Max’s Big Climb – Saturday July 23rd
Do you like hill climbing and want to challenge yourself against some local riders and raise funds for charity? Please see message below about an upcoming event called ‘Max’s Big Climb’:
There will be a new 'King' and 'Queen of the Mountain'. We are pleased to be partnering with Mountain Equipment Co-operative + Shawn & Ed Brewing Co. to bring you ‘Max's Big Climb’.
Saturday, July 23rd marks the first running of Max's Big Climb - a time trial race up iconic Sydenham Hill in Dundas. Sydenham has been ridden over 12,000 times on Strava and made famous by Canadian Olympian Clara Hughes.
Now, for the first time, you can race this stretch of road all for a good cause - to raise money for research into a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Riders will race up the closed 1 km course to determine the 'King' and 'Queen of the Mountain'.
There are two ways to win.
1. Riders will first race the hill individually against the clock. All riders will be professionally timed and ranked according to their gender/age groups. The fastest rider in each category will be recognized. Each rider will ride the hill twice – only the fastest time will count.
2. The fastest 4 men and women overall will be seeded for the head-to-head Knockout Stages. In the Knockout Stages, winners will advance and race again to determine a 'King' and 'Queen of the Mountain' in what is sure to be an exciting series of races.
We'd love to see you on Sydenham in what is sure to be an amazing event - and also a fundraiser to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. 100% of the proceeds from this event will go to fund research through the established charity Jesse's Journey.
Register for this race today and help defeat Duchenne! Only $40.
