Tip of the Week: Professional Bike Fit

This weeks tip of the week concerns the value of a professional bike fit. Most of this comes from my own personal experience.

For many years, I rode a mountain bike that was purchased and never actually properly fit for me.  This was my only bike so, when I started finding myself doing more road riding, I was also starting to do longer and longer rides.  I also used the mountain bike on my VR trainer in the winter.

I found that my back and shoulders really started bothering me. I went to the doctor who sent me to physio and, being a cyclist himself, recommended I take the bike in for a proper fit.

I won't say it was night and day after the fitting, as I also learned that I needed to strengthen my core as well as being in properly fit.  However, it did make a difference and I knew that I wasn't putting strain on parts that didn't need to be strained.

Since the first fitting, I have gone back for fitting adjustments now and then.

It's important to listen to your body and to get a proper fitting. Aches and pains on the bike are inevitable but they don't have to be damaging.

Passing Slower Groups

An incident happened this past week with a couple of the 407/Appleby groups.  One of the faster groups was passing a slower group.  From what I was told, there were no warnings to let the slower group know that passing was going to happen.  What's worse, I've been told that there was some attitude shown towards the slower riders.

This is unacceptable and inconsistent with the etiquette we try to instill.  We're all trying to enjoy ourselves out there.  We want to encourage more people to cycle.  If you are a faster group approaching a slower group and it's not safe to pass, slow down and pass when it's safe to do so.
